“Sisters of Fate” is a series of miniature figurines accompanied by hand-embroidered poems. These monstrous and delicate figures re-interpret the tale of the Sisters of Fate of Greek mythology. The three sisters of the original myth represent the past, present, and future and together weave the fates of all humanity. The figures here use the materiality of their bodies to craft the eternal cycles of life: birth (“The grotesque vulnerability of living”), life (“The protection of time through infinite faces”), and death (“The erotics of eternal torment”). Each claims a monumental fate that is sensual, dark, and rooted in the power of the feminine.
The birth figure leads the way through an obscene vulnerability, her heart literally bursting forth, and becomes a beacon to others through her exposure. Life takes the form of a feminized Cerberus (guardian of hell), rejoicing in the act of eating — a metaphor for the present — and refusing the limitations that prevent women from connecting to the joys of eating and having full bellies. Death appears as a seductive mermaid deity, her story one of the queer erotics of depression.
Colorful elements break through the marble-like whiteness of these miniature monuments, suggesting a dialogue between freedom and constraint. The embroidered poems invite a deeper relationship with this re-written mythology, in which the sisters are weaving fates not for others, but for themselves.
